Massive Machine-Type Communications and Revival of ALOHA

In this paper, we provide an overview of recent developments in the domain of Machine-Type Communications (MTC) for current and next-generation wireless cellular systems. We describe existing MTC standards and discuss in more detail the necessity of novel solutions for massive access of machinetype devices to the mobile cellular network. In particular, we focus on recent developments in the domain of ALOHA-based random access, known as Coded Slotted ALOHA (CSA). We review recent results that show CSA is capable of dramatically increasing the throughput of ALOHA-based schemes, both in single base-station and multi-base station scenarios, making CSA one of the suitable candidates for future MTC.
